News Cotton Export Ban Under Review India – the world’s second-largest grower of cotton – announced plans in late March to temporarily ban exports of the commodity, a decision that prompted the country’s prime minister to call for an urgent meeting of government lead-ers. If the ban is kept in place, global cotton prices may jump in the short term and make international buyers wary about sourcing from India. A revocation of the export restrictions would stabilize markets. The intent of the ban, according to trade officials, is to ensure India can maintain a sufficient supply of cotton for its own textile companies. Already, in its current fis-cal year, India had exported nearly 9.4 million bales of cot-Cotton production in India is expected to reach a record 34.5 million bales in the 2011-’12 marketing year. ton, one million higher than the projected surplus quota. Cotton production in India is expected to reach a record 34.5 million bales in the 2011-’12 marketing year, an increase of 600,000 bales compared to the prior term. By far, India’s larg-est customer is China, which has absorbed 80% of cotton exports in the current cycle. News of the proposed ban comes about one year after cotton prices reached an his-toric $2.27 per pound. Cur-rently, though, cotton trades at around $0.90 per pound, although the price reduction has not dramatically changed the cost of garment produc-tion. India’s farm minister has advocated removing the ban, calling it “highly objection-able” and unexpected. – CR Forw ard th i n k ing M-Series Quick facts • Print 720 to 1440dpi faster -with more ink • has patent pending wiMS (white ink Management System) onboard • an all new firmware designed specifically for textiles • Scalable production from 2 to 8 garments and super wide all over prints • a new way to print -iQ interweave – eliminates banding at all resolutions • Print up to 70+ garments (white) or 35+ (color) per hour (60+ per hour with one Pass Fast*) • Print 24" x 17.7" (610mm x 450mm) or 24" x 47" (610mm x 1200mm) area – that’s flexible (*view speed and production rates live at www.dtgdigital/mseries) m series industrial Print in an entirely new way!! the dtg M-Series range of direct to garment inkjet printers delivers the industry’s most advanced print platform -engineered specifically for textile applications.
